2.5% annually

Zakat

One of the five pillars of Islam: a mandatory annual contribution for eligible Muslims whose wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold.

  • Typically calculated as 2.5% of Zakat-eligible wealth.
  • Usually given once per lunar year – many choose to pay during Ramadan.
  • Recipients are clearly defined groups in the Quran, primarily people in need.

Zakat al-Fitr

A small, mandatory contribution at the end of Ramadan – per person in the household, including children.

  • Should be paid before the Eid prayer.
  • Traditionally given as staple food or a monetary equivalent.
  • Current amounts are set annually by aid organisations.

Qurbani

Sacrificial offering associated with Eid al-Adha and the Hajj season in the month of Dhul Hijjah.

  • The meat is traditionally divided into three portions – family, neighbours, and people in need.
  • Through aid organisations, Qurbani also reaches families in crisis regions.
